Pupil Premium - Research to Support Spending Decisions

Evidence based tips from the Education Endowment Foundation (and how Loudmouth can help you implement these!)

This month (Jan 2025), sees the next installment, for many schools, of their Pupil Premium grant. The grant is designed to support funding to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in state-funded schools in England. But what is the best way for schools to use this additional funding?

The Education Endowment Foundation have produced some tips with research based evidence on the most effective approaches to support your spending decisions. You can view a poster with the key tips here.

Loudmouth has over 30 years' experience of supporting schools and can work with your school to implement some of these evidence based strategies. These include....

Investing in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)- The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) state that 'pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds or other vulnerable groups, on average, have weaker SEL skills at all ages than their better off classmates'. Loudmouth's programmes provide accessible and effective ways to engage learners of all ages to explore their own and others' emotions. This can really help build relationship skills with role play to explore listening and communication skills.

SEND Support - Pupils with SEND are also more than twice as likely to be eligible for free school meals. Theatre in education can help promote positive relationships, active engagement and wellbeing, however many theatre in education companies do not have the capacity or skills to work with pupils with SEND. We offer different formats and workshops for pupils with SEND.

Extracurricular Activities and Arts Participation- Arts participation is defined as involvement in artistic and creative activities, such as music painting, or drama. It can occur either as part of the curriculum such as the use of drama to support RSHE or as extra-curricular activity. Arts participation approaches can have a positive impact on academic outcomes in other areas of the curriculum.

Professional Development for Staff on Confidence and Skills in Delivering RSHE - Pupil Premium can be used to support professional development that is crucial to teacher practice. This can be to build knowledge, motivate teachers, build new skills and embed new approaches. Our RSHE training courses can help staff to increase the range of techniques available to them and increase their confidence and creativity in applying them to a range of different topics.
