Loudmouth and Pupils with SEND
Did you know that about 10% of our work is in settings for pupils with special education needs and disabilities (SEND)?
Jan 07, 2025
Loudmouth has been working with pupils with SEND for over 30 years. All of our programmes have versions for SEN settings and can be adapted to suit the needs of different pupils.
In 2024, we delivered over 100 sessions in SEN settings, working with over 2,000 pupils with a range of different needs. We also worked with thousands more pupils with SEND in mainstream school settings.
We hear. from many of the SEN settings we work in, about how it can be hard for them to find outside agencies who have the capability and skill to work with their students. Some theatre in eduation companies are unable to offer adapted workshops or do not have staff that are trained in working with pupils with SEND. Sadly this means that pupils with SEND can miss out on some important education and experiences.
"Loudmouth presented well and the use of role-play enables pupils to follow the session. It was well supported for SEND with marked breaks and demarked roles. Thought-provoking impact. Fantastic to see multiple issues brought together with humour and memorable presentation." - Designated Safeguarding Lead, Brooke School, Warwickshire
We would love to work with your school to support pupils with SEND. Our staff are given training in working with a range of different needs and have delivered in a variety of settings including schools for hearing or visually impaired students.
We ensure that we follow best practice. A report into the effectiveness of theatre in education highlighted how effective theatre in education can be with pupils with SEND whilst highlighting the need to material to be adapted, "it may be appropriate for the performance to be broken down into smaller pieces, or to stop the action by freeze-framing to allow for review.". Our programmes use a range of different techniques depending on the needs of the group. This can include repeating scenes and breaking down the drama into smaller, key moments. The numbers per group are lower and the pace, levels of discussion and language are all calibrated to the group. The noise and music levels are adjusted and we work closely with signers where needed. We have strong safeguarding provisions and all of our delivery staff are Level 3 safeguarding trained.
"Very patient staff, who are happy to adapt content to cater for our SEND group. Friendly, approachable actors who were very understanding towards students with SEND." - Teacher, Newbury Independent School, Birmingham
