Update on RSHE Guidance

Want to know the latest on where things stand with the Relationships, Sex and Health Education Guidance?

Earlier this year, the then government, issued a new draft guidance for Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE). The consultation on this closed in July and the guidance is under review.

There has been no formal announcement, however the PSHE Association does not expect there to be any announcement until next year.

They also flag that ‘until the consultation responses have been reviewed and the guidance is finalised it’s important to remember that the 2019 RSHE guidance remains in force’. Some schools have already made changes to their RSHE and have removed or included elements from the still draft guidance.

Many key specialist RSHE organisations including the Sex Education Forum and the PSHE Association have raised concerns about the draft guidance and the need for a clearer evidence based approach and concerns about some age restrictions on teaching. This could mean that some young people would not get preventative education before they experience situations where that could be vital.

The current government have announced a call for evidence is open as part of the Government Curriculum & Assessment Review (CAR), with RSHE now confirmed as falling in scope of the Review. You can take part in this here.

Loudmouth are keeping close tabs on the guidance and whatever the final decisions are, our work will comply with the guidance. Until there are any formal announcements, our work will continue to comply with the 2019 guidance.
