Screen Time - Our New Programme Gets Great Feedback
There is a lot of talk from schools and parents about children's use of smartphones. Shows like Netflix's Adolescence have created a lot of debate and concerns but what can schools do to support children when they get their first smartphone? Our new programme, Screen Time, gently opens up discussions and shows the many positives of being online whilst being able to make sense of what children see and how they can talk to parents and other trusted adults.

Our new programme, Screen Time, has started touring and it has had a great response so far. We have run sessions for children and young people in Years 6 and 7 as well as awareness raising sessions for parents and teachers. The programme looks at media literacy and helps children, young people and parents to be able to talk more openly about being online and to be able to better spot dis and misinformation (if you're not sure what these are yourself then here is a quick explainer video)
We have featured some of the great feedback from the students we have worked with and some of the data from the first few sessions.
"It helps you know the harmful side of being online and the positive side of the internet." - Year 6 pupil"
The programme was commissioned by Ofcom and is currently touring around East Birmingham schools. The tour was fully funded for schools but is now fully booked! Schools can still buy Screen Time sessions in for themselves for the summer term.
"It helps because I learned that if you stay on your phone all night it will affect your mental health! But if you don't you will get good sleep." - Year 6 pupil"
- After the session, 86% of students said that they felt very confident or totally confident about spotting whether something online is truthful or accurate. Before the session, for the same group, it was only 41%.
- 77% felt very or totally confident about talking to their parents about being online up from 64% before the session.
- 91% said that they knew a lot or loads about how online content can affect your feelings and health compared to 57% before the session.
