Survey shows teachers are not adequately trained to deliver sex education lessons (And Loudmouth can help!)

A recent survey calls for better teacher training on delivering Sex and Relationship Education (SRE). The survey of parents, teachers and governors shows that although more than nine in 10 parents feel it is very important that children receive information on practising safer sex and using contraception, teachers don’t have the training to be able to deliver these lessons confidently.

The groundbreaking survey is the first of its kind to ask the views of parents, teachers and governors on SRE in England. It was carried out by the National Confederation of Parent Teachers Associations, National Association of Head Teachers and National Governors Association in partnership with Durex.

The survey showed that 80% of teachers do not feel trained and confident to talk about SRE. And the teaching materials available to them could be improved – only 9% of teachers rated them as very useful. More than one in four teachers and almost a fifth of governors also believe that current sex education in schools is failing children by preparing them for the future ‘not well’ or ‘not at all well’.

This news comes at a time when Loudmouth’s training is shown to increase staff’s knowledge, skills and confidence in delivering SRE. Our approach uses simple techniques that staff can build into their PSHE work and really increase staff’s confidence and skills.

Our training programme on ‘How to Work Effectively with Children and Young People on PSHE Issues’ has been working with teachers and other professionals since 1995 and is used as part of the PSHE certification in some areas. Our work is proven to help teachers to find flexible, practical tools that they can use to make PSHE relevant, accessible and straightforward to deliver.

If your school or organisation recognises the issues raised by this survey and wants to find a way to build confidence and push your PSHE and SRE programme forward then contact us on 0121 4464880 or click here for more details on the training.
